Completing a Medical Elective in a developing country will expose you to techniques and illnesses that are rarely seen in the UK. Working in a limited-resource environment will also push you to become more innovative and force you to seek creative solutions to medical problems. Often, cases are more advanced than you would see in a Western hospital, due to a patient’s inability to pay for initial treatment.
You’ll get the chance to learn alongside skilled local professionals, who will share their knowledge and teach you about the healthcare issues of your host country. While abroad, you will also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, and experience life with a host family.

What type of Electives can I do?
Projects Abroad currently offer seven different Elective placements for university students:
- Medicine
- Nursing
- Dentistry
- Midwifery
- Pharmacy
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational Therapy
Students are able to specify which department they’d like to work in. Nursing students, for example, could specialise in adult or child nursing. Medical students can choose from a range of options, including A&E, Orthopaedics and Obstetrics. Some students prefer to rotate around a number of different departments. We know how to arrange a placement that meets your requirements and gives you a full and rewarding experience of the country in which you are based. Unlike other providers, our Electives are offered in many destinations around Nepal, so you have a wide range of exciting options to choose from.
We arrange your accommodation, meals, insurance, and transport to and from your placement where necessary. You will be supervised by seasoned medical professionals at your placement, whether you’re working at a hospital, clinic or a practice dedicated to your specialism. Finally, we provide strong pre-departure and 24/7 in country support to make sure your time abroad runs as smoothly as possible.
